Navigating Copyright and Ownership: AI as an author?
Recent court decisions in Japan, Germany, the UK and the US, have highlighted critical IP issues for both organizations and creators with respect to ownership of AI-generated content. They have sparked consideration of questions such as: Who owns the work when it has been generated by AI? Can an AI system assign or license its IP rights? How can organizations responsibly use generative AI given IP considerations?
In this 60-minute session, the discussion will include:
- An overview of recent consultations by the Government of Canada on authorship of AI-generated works and potential amendments to the Copyright Act.
- Recent cases on authorship of AI-generated works.
- A consideration of patent protection for AI-generated inventions.
- Practical insights to guide your organization in terms of the responsible use of generative AI tools for content creation and as part of the invention process.
