Dr. Andrew Elphinstone has over 30 years’ experience leading new product development and organisational change programs in start-up and high growth organizations in the UK and Canada. He has managed development teams of 60 staff on programs of value $25M and delivered intellectual property, novel technology and new products and services to the ‘top 10 pharma’ and leading biotechnology companies in North America and Europe.
Andrew has a degree and PhD in Engineering from Sheffield University in the UK and spent a year at Xi’An Jiaotong University in China after which he worked as a Technology Consultant developing novel imaging and robotic systems for international pharmaceutical customers. These projects drove the growth of a spin-off company of which he was a co-founder (TAP Biosystems) where he built an engineering team to deliver IT and robotic systems for automated compound management and cell culture. In customer facing roles Andrew has defined, developed and delivered new products on multi-million-dollar projects and established a Professional services operation, all of which supported the growth of the organization from 15 staff to a $40M business (now part of Sartorius Stedim Biotech).
In Vancouver Andrew led the product development at Boreal Genomics, a UBC start-up, where he won grant funding and led the engineering and manufacturing teams to launch a novel instrument and disposable for the concentration of DNA. Following this role Andrew established the Project Management Office at STEMCELL Technologies and then headed up the Instrumentation Business Unit at STEMCELL Technologies where he had staffing and P&L responsibility for new product development, manufacture and service for all cell separation and cell culture instruments and consumables.
