VentureLabs alumni company, Moment Energy, is advancing Canada’s clean energy transition by transforming retired EV batteries into scalable, certified energy storage systems. As the country moves toward Net Zero by 2050, their second-life battery technology is helping wind and solar reach their full potential.

Recently, Moment Energy announced a strategic investment and commercial partnership with Copec WIND Ventures, marking the start of a multi-region rollout of second-life battery storage projects across Latin America and Europe. The goal is to deploy 45 MWh of near-term projects, expanding to an additional 300 MWh through repurposed batteries from Chile’s electric bus fleet.

“Energy storage is pivotal for renewable energy integration,” said co-founder Sumreen Rattan. “Intermittent sources like solar and wind can’t reach their full potential without it.”

“Partnering with Copec represents a pivotal milestone,” added CEO and co-founder Edward Chiang. “Together, we’re enhancing energy security and accelerating the shift to clean, affordable power.”

Moment Energy began in a home garage in 2020, where a group of SFU engineering students, fresh from building electric Formula-E race cars, saw a bigger opportunity: transforming retired EV batteries into reliable, second-life energy storage systems.
